Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at a Title I school where 100% of our students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Some of my students participate in an after school program where they receive a hot meal before going home. We also have a clothing closet that my students can shop in once a month to get three free outfits and a pair of shoes.
My classroom consist of eager and enthusiastic children who love to learn.
For a majority of my students, this is the first time they are in a classroom setting. I want to provide more hands-on resources for my students to master the standards in reading and math. Most of my students do not have basic skills needed when they enter into kindergarten. I want to provide them engaging resources that help them master the standards in a fun way. It is important for me to provide this for them and I want them to have a strong foundation when they go to first grade.
My Project
The foundation of reading takes place in kindergarten. In order to have a solid foundation, students must master phonics ( letters and sounds), phonemic awareness ( manipulating sounds and identify beginning, middle, and ending sounds), and sight words. During workshops students will be working on these skills in order to master phonics, phonemic awareness, and sight words.
The resources that I am ordering from Lakeshore will provide my students with center activities to practice these skills.
Students will be given a variety of activities for each skill. Students will be actively engaged in phonemic awareness by using the following resources: beginning Sounds Instant Learning Center, Pop and Match Beginning and Ending Sounds, and Fill in the Blank Phonics. They will also have the opportunity to engage in word building and sight words by using the following resources: Touch and Read CVC Match, Stack and Build Simple Words, Build a House, and the Simple Sentence Instant Learning Center.
By using these resources in our classroom throughout the year, students will build a strong foundation and will be able to successfully read by the end of kindergarten.
