Our school is situated in North-Central Kansas. Students come from hard-working, dedicated families and are taking my class to learn another language to help give them a leg up in life after high school. Belleville is a small, rural community that has students of various socio-economic classes. Republic County High School serves many communities in the county and has about 250 students 6-12 in the school. Many students come from farming families and drive upwards of 30 minutes to school everyday.
My students are hard-working, creative, love hands-on activities, and real-world situations to help them better learn Spanish.
Students at my school are inquisitive, compassionate, and creative. They love the use of authentic materials and reading short passages in the language. They are incredible students who have changed my life in the short time I have been with them!
My Project
Reading is a great way for language learners to see the language in an authentic manner. I would love to include Free Voluntary Reading (FVR) in my curriculum. By having a larger variety of books, student can choose something at their level to read during class time.
Free Voluntary Reading has been shown to help increase student's vocabulary in the Target Language as well as their confidence in the language.
By using novels and books as a way of teaching, students are exposed to the language in a more authentic manner. They see grammatical structures and vocabulary in context. I hope to use reading as a way to teach and encourage students to use their language skills!
