Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a small neighborhood public dual language elementary school with a fine arts focus. Our school serves 98% children of color, 87% receive free or reduced lunch, 70% are learning English as a second language, and 20% have been identified with one or more disabilities. In the dire financial climate of Chicago Public Schools, our community has endured years of budget cuts, layoffs, and dwindling resources. But that's just the numbers.
My students are remarkable humans, and our school is a vibrant, empathetic, and affirming community that truly supports children and their families.
As a dual language school, all of our students receive instruction every day in both English and Spanish, so that no matter their home language, they will graduate fully bilingual and biliterate. We've received federal grants to support artist residencies, to give all of our students access to theater, music, and visual arts. Our parent community runs GED and ESL classes, exercise groups, and a small business start up.
As a special education teacher, I work with all students in the school to develop communication and independent functioning skills. With support, all of my students develop their passions and build beautiful things.
My Project
In our special education resource room, my students work to discover their own learning profiles and to develop strategies that enable lifelong learning.
For my students, learning is not just a mental task: it's physical!
They need support to find the postures, positions, movements, and environments where they can focus and learn. In our classroom, we make safe movement a priority!
With this equipment, my students will have flexible work and play areas. Students can pedal on the stationary bike while they read or write. They can use the laptop table as a standing desk or as a portable work station. The screen, headphones, and sound machine can create private calm space for students to work, regulate their emotions, and rest. The exercise mats can help my students move safely. We all look forward to a safe, active year!
