About My Students

O.W.L.S. is the Outstanding Women of Leadership Society at our High School. It is an organization for female identifying students to work together, build their skills, create school change, and impact their community. Outside of their regular student commitments, members of the society must maintain a leadership role within the our Community, complete 20 service hours throughout the school year, design and implement a "Project for Change" in our school.

These 7 young women work endlessly to improve our school and community. This year they have decided to beautify our school community in efforts to change the culture.

My students are emerging leaders and have spent so much time and dedication creating this project. They have learned how to effectively evaluate their surroundings, develop plans, communicate with their peers and adults in the building, and establish action steps for implementation. They've determined they need large trashcans for our hallways, cleaning supplies for a "Clean Up Crew", and art supplies to help create a positive environment. As the project continues, they are truly learning what it means to have commitment and be resilient individuals. They risen have all worked together to overcome challenges and determine new ways to fix the identified problems.

By working on this project together, they are learning how to be a part of a team and build upon each other's ideas. They spend time listening to one another, collaborating, and strategizing. They've grown already in their ability to think critically and it is amazing to see them develop as students and leaders in our school!

In Their Own Words

Our goal is to improve our school culture and have a cleaner school environment. With this project we will beautify our school as a whole. We are planning this project to decrease the amount of garbage that is thrown in our hallways and beautifying our communal space. The OWLS as an organization wants to show more pride within our school. We want to have all of our bulletin boards filled with something that shows what our students are involved in and what they have accomplished. We want to allow sports teams, clubs, and staff members to have their own boards so that they can express their pride for our school as well. We want to clean our hallways and cafeteria as well because we believe that a cleaner environment helps the kids improve their habits of mind and improves their learning environment.

This required a lot of planning and dedication. We had to decide what we wanted to improve in our community and school. This is helping us develop school logistical awareness. We also had to create roles, deadlines, action plans, and meetings with many staff members. This is improving many skills like, organization, multi tasking, delegating, collaboration with community members, and its making us more responsible.

This project is important for our organization because we believe that our school deserves to be clean and full of pride. We want our school to be welcoming and our peers to feel comfortable. When we walk in the hallways we want to feel a sense of school spirit. The project will decrease student apathy and will improve the learning environment for all of us. This will make us feel more secure within our school.
