This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I aim to create a safe and nurturing environment where our students can heal from the traumas they have endured. Our community has faced several challenges including fires, poverty, and homelessness. The impact on our students cannot be understated. In order to support their healing process, I want to focus on two crucial elements: providing snacks and engaging in game activities.

One fundamental aspect of promoting healing is meeting basic needs.

Many of our students come from households affected by poverty and may not have access to regular meals. By offering snacks during our time together, we are able to ensure that their bellies are nourished. This not only contributes to their physical well-being but also creates a sense of stability and security. When our students have their nutritional needs met, they are better equipped to engage in the healing process.

Discussing traumatic experiences can be challenging for anyone, especially young individuals who may struggle to articulate their emotions. By incorporating games into our healing sessions, we provide a medium through which our students can express themselves more comfortably. Games and fidget toys create a relaxed and non-threatening atmosphere, encouraging open dialogue.

Through these games, we hope to encourage students to share their experiences with trauma and express their emotions. As they play and engage in activities, they may find it easier to connect with their peers and express their thoughts and feelings. This process not only fosters the basic need for connection but also reminds us that we are not alone in our experiences.

By creating a safe space where students can come together, share their stories, and engage in healing activities, we foster a sense of belonging and community. This sense of belonging can help our students feel understood, supported, and validated in their experiences.
