Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At my school, we maintain a student-centered, whole-child approach to education. Through this lens, we have identified three areas where students need support to grow and be successful: providing a safe, compassionate school environment; providing a high-quality academic experience through our dual language program; and integrating social-emotional learning into students’ daily learning.
As a school counseling provider, the projects you will see from me will be focused on building a compassionate, trauma-informed school environment, which is a place where students feel safe, respected, and free to learn and be themselves.
You will see projects asking for resources that promote healing. As a Title I school this year, two-thirds of students at our school receive free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch. Our school is a high needs school, but our students do their best every day despite what is happening in their lives, and it is my hope to give them additional tools for success.
My Project
Help me give my students an opportunity to take a sensory break within the classroom with a sensory swing. A sensory swing will be an effective tool in a classroom which helps provide a safe space for children with different self-regulation needs.
A sensory swing in my classroom will allow my students an opportunity to regulate their emotions while integrated with a safe, calm, and welcoming environment for all.
Much like a blanket, the sensory swing cuddles and cocoons a child as they swing side to side. Having access to tools like the sensory swing will create an opportunity to gain the sensory feedback to their body which enables better sensory regulation and the ability to engage in learning.
