Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Remember when school sometimes was too overwhelming to focus and you just wanted a break? The modern pre-teen sometimes faces too much stimulus and it can get in the way of their learning, which is why we are working together to motivate each other and be cognizant of our needs for a mental break!
My scholars are working together to combat bullying and encourage one another to give it 100% in their learning by never giving up.
One way we're doing this is to create a "Place of Peace" in our classroom, where scholars can take a mental time-out of no more than 3 minutes in our classroom.
I am honored to teach about 120 intelligent, hard-working, and motivated self-starting scholars who know how to inspire each other. My scholars come from a public pre-K through 6th grade elementary school in New Jersey. As 6th graders, they are going through many challenges (about 90% of our scholars participate in the free/reduced breakfast & lunch program) and changes. One change is learning how to navigate departmentalized learning (a different teacher for each subject instead of one teacher for all subjects). We have discovered this can be quite overwhelming and some of my scholars need the opportunity to re-focus in order to learn at their highest capacity.
My Project
As a group, the scholars and I discovered that we need to continue to inspire each other every day in order to succeed as a group. We decided to create a Place of Peace in our classroom, covered with words of encouragement written by the scholars. To finish it off, we need help furnishing this Place of Peace with a comfortable rug, bean bags, pillows, and most importantly, a timer. We time ourselves so that we do not spend too much time away from our work in our Place of Peace but just enough so that we can refocus and reassess our goals, the most important of which is to aim for 100%. This will help create a sense of accountability in the scholars as well as a sense of urgency and purpose in their actions.
My scholars often do not feel comfortable in their learning and we aim to make sure each and every scholar is able to achieve at their highest potential in the confines of our classroom.
My scholars and I aim for 100% with every activity every day.
Providing my scholars with the opportunity to enjoy a moment of peace will help reach all scholars of all learning styles, especially those who need a moment to break away and re-focus. This will help ensure our classroom culture is strong and provide a context for all to participate and feel safe.
