My students need a soft carpet and flexible seating along with feelings dolls and materials to create a safe space to calm down and practice self regulation.
In two weeks, my new classroom will be filled with 20 eager Kindergartners. I will meet my students for the first time on September 4th, 2018. My class will be their first experience of school. I aim to provide a clean, safe, engaging environment where all of my students can succeed.
Together we will build a safe welcoming learning community.
Each child will feel included and play a meaningful part in the success of the whole class. We will learn to navigate our feelings and how to use our brains and all five senses to learn about our world.
My Project
Before learning can happen, students need to know they are safe, loved, and valued by their teacher and their classmates. While my new classroom has equipment and furniture to support academic success, flexible seating and materials to support children's social emotional growth are currently missing from the room. Contribute to this project to transform the empty corner of my room in the photo into a vital learning space.
You can create a safe place for my students to calm down, explore their feelings, and manage their emotions!
The soothing blue oval carpet I have selected features children displaying different emotions and will be the foundation of our safe space. A bean bag chair and soft pillows in sage and pale blue colors add to a sense of peace and safety. Feelings dolls and simple picture books showing emotions allow children to name and explore their feelings.
I will provide from my own funds a self care station including Kleenex and sensory materials that students may use in the safe place. Students may visit the "safe place" freely throughout the day. When they feel calm and collected they then rejoin the class ready to learn.
