This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come to my classroom by way of 6 continents, profound life experiences, and with a strong desire to learn. We are an urban high school in a neighborhood of Boston and have about 750 students in total. I teach about 100 of them in my three history classes for ESL students (who are learning English as a second language), my “newcomers” advisory of students who recently immigrated to the USA, and my one AP psychology class.

My students astound me everyday with their drive to succeed and take in as much as they can about the world around them.

I am truly optimistic for the future because these young men and women are the leaders of tomorrow. My students deserve an education without limits and I am determined to make this possible. Thank you for visiting this page and learning more about my class!

My Project

Thank you so much for reading about my project, "Creating a Reading Corner in an Urban ESL Classroom.” I teach 3 sections of ESL US History and one “newcomers” advisory section at a school in Boston, Massachusetts and I have the dream of creating a reading corner in our classroom. This reading corner would provide a welcoming and encouraging environment for students to read during independent work time and also a small library from which students could borrow books.

This reading corner will provide a space for my students to expand their learning of English and will also encourage independent reading.

The rug and beanbag chairs will provide a comfortable place for students to sit and read during advisory and independent reading time. A lamp is included in the request to cultivate adequate lighting for our reading corner. I have also requested a small bookcase and numerous books asked for by students including young adult fiction titles and books from the “Who Is” series. My students also requested some popular young adult books in Spanish and French so even if their English skills are lower, they can still enjoy the books. Many of my students had difficult journeys getting to the US, and work long hours outside of school; they deserve a comfortable and encouraging place to enjoy reading and using their English skills.
