Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students attend a therapeutic public day school. The school is for grades 1-12, and we have 225 students. Each student has been diagnosed with an emotional disability. The students need both academic instruction and support from the teachers and staff to manage their fears, anger, frustration, and sadness. The students also struggle with the English language as well as poverty.
One of the defining characteristics of a student with an emotional disability is their inability to learn despite the fact that they have no cognitive disability.
Our students struggle with learning. To help make the curriculum accessible, each student has an Individual Education Program.
The school uses a behavior system where the students can follow how they are doing in each class. At our school, we have five core values: be here, be safe, be honest, care for self and others, let go and move on, and commit to goal. Students create goals for themselves, usually surrounding emotions or success at school and track their progress toward that goal.
My Project
Our students struggle with confidence. They have a tendency to give up very quickly when school work or problems seem too difficult. Often times this is a learned response and they find they can often get the answers to problems by not responding at all and waiting for someone to give them the answers. Our school provides both behavioral and academic support and with this program we hope our students gain more independence and confidence in their daily lives.
Applied Brainology is a blended learning curriculum that teaches students how to apply a growth mindset to their school work and daily lives.
The program includes videos, discussion boards, and online activities accessed through Moodle, as well as offline classroom activities.
