Celebrating Black History Month

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Low-income households with high hoping students, that is the makeup of my classroom. I teach at the most diverse school in the state of Connecticut. I have learned so much about the world through the eyes of my talented students over the last eight years. Ironically, as worldly as my students may seem, many of them have never been outside of the city lines of Danbury. We are the largest high school in the state, reaching the poorest of the poor in the community.

Many of my students are visual learners, but often struggle to understand some of the references made in class.

I try to provide as many aides as possible, but it gets hard with limited resources. I want to make the curriculum meaningful for my students. This is especially true for the Shakespeare unit. Shakespearian plays were meant to be seen and heard. I show my students clips from the movie adaptations, but I want to provide them with greater experience and connection to the text, especially beyond one they could get on their couch watching Netflix. I want to make Shakespeare's words come alive right before their eyes.

My Project

The supplies I am asking for will help to foster a positive learning environment for all of my students. I am asking for basic supplies and resources that unfortunately are not provided by the school. All of the supplies are colorful and meaningful in some way to both me and my students because of how they will be used.

In order for students to succeed, they need to feel comfortable in the environment in which they are learning.

The stools will be used to allow students flexible seating and will be perfect for small groups. The posters enforce positive messages of equality and self-love.
