My Students
The students in my classrooms are becoming increasingly tech savvy. If possible, they would spend all of their time connected to some device that would give them access to the internet. Hurricane Harvey could not take away their passion for all things electronic. More than 75% of my students are economically disadvantaged. Their homes are still in different states of repair, so furthest from the top of the list of priorities for these families is internet service. They really love all their lessons presented in a technological format. Use of computers with internet service is something they look forward to everyday.
My second graders want a one-to-one environment where they can interact with classmates and their teacher at the same time, electronically.
The few who have phones often ask for days when they can bring their own devices. For those that do not have their own devices, it would not be a fun day. We share the tablets that are available in the classroom and everyone makes sure they get equal time. They really are a caring bunch of little people.
My Project
The requested materials will first of all have a calming effect on the students, since technology is one of the things that really makes them happy. They will be able to take a break from the worry they sometimes still experience regarding who will pick them up from school or whose house they will sleep at on a given night.
The Chromebooks will also increase my students' participation in class by allowing them to interact more frequently with technology.
The more they participate the more they learn. The Chromebooks will help to elevate their reading levels, math comprehension levels, and scientific understandings. The programs available from my district are best utilized when every student has access to them at the same time. These Chromebooks will give my students that accessibility.
