My students need lap desks, stools, and cushions for a new seating area for my library as well as more flexible seating options. I also want to restock my class library for students who love the Harry Potter Series!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach fourth grade in the Soundview Projects in the Bronx and next year I am going to have a room of 30 eager children. Again, I will try to get my students to buy into my philosophy of "Never Settle for Less Than Your Best", and for them to work as hard as they can during the year.
I always expect my students to be role models for the other fourth grade classes, as I set a goal to read around 10 class sets of books outside of the school curriculum.
They will read Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Frindle, Because of Winn-Dixie, Charlotte's Web, Eagle Song, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Watsons Go To Birmingham 1963, Hatchet, Crossover, Number the Stars, and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
My students last year tried their best to be young professionals and lead the way for other students around the school and did an exemplary job,. However, in order for my students to work as hard as I hope they can, I need to make sure that the classroom is well stocked for the upcoming year!
My Project
I have my students read almost compulsively. Every day I send my students home at the end of the day with the book that we are reading as a class. Of course not all of the copies come back at the end of the year, so I usually try to restock my class sets before the new year. My students really loved reading the first book in the Harry Potter Series, and I would love to have the other books available to them. I also chose to request different types of seating such as the stools, the laptop stands, the foam seats for the library, the balance balls, and the cushions.
With the seating choices that will be at the students disposal, along with an updated library area, I believe my students will be engaged like never before.
There is a tremendous amount of research that has been done on flexible seating and giving students choices. The literature states that students are more actively engaged, it actually helps students focus more, and can help them become independent learners!
I envision my room becoming much more student centered. They will have far more choices on how they can do their work, where they do their work, and who they can work with. By giving the students these materials, I believe they will become even more avid readers and love to read. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in independent reading, and this project will only help enrich their experiences. They will be able to really curl up with a good book and enjoy the literature!
