Creating a New African American Narrative

My students need 40 copies of Charles Johnson & Patricia Smith's "Africans in America: America's Journey Through Slavery."

Students in our African American History classes are engaged in creating a new African American historical narrative emphasizing the active role people of African descent played in shaping American culture and experience.

Uncovering the evidence supporting the argument that people of African American heritage shaped their environments and resisted mistreatment is challenging. Engaging students with stories that bring people and events of the past alive inspire students to dig deeper into the primary sources from which these stories are created.

Charles Johnson and Patricia Smith have researched and written a book brimming with stories that students love. "Africans in America" vividly presents stories of happiness, sorrow, humanity, and resistance cast against the backdrop of dehumanizing slavery. The authors use primary sources to support fictionalized stories that bring the events and people to life. A classroom set of "Africans in America" will allow students to build knowledge of important but often overlooked Americans, and to foster a relationship with a fantastic book.

Your support of our project will help us foster a love of books and history among young people studying African American history. Supporting this project will also provide students with skills that will help them succeed in college. Analyzing and evaluating the primary and secondary sources in "Africans in America" will equip students with higher order cognitive skills that will be tested and built on in their college careers. With your help students will have a resource to help them create a new African American story that escapes the old narrative of victimization and oppression and uncovers the stories of heroism, survival, and hope that cast a guiding light for future American leaders and innovators.
