I work in Queens for the New York City Department of Education in what is accurately described as one of the most ethnically diverse communities on Earth. Over the course of my tenure, my school has claimed students from nearly 100 countries, speaking approximately 40 languages. The learning community services a multi-ethnic, multilingual population predominantly hailing from Asia. Largely composed of families from China, the student community comes to school bringing culture-rich experiences from across the globe. This cultural richness is celebrated across school curricula and it is the cornerstone of the school’s identity as an institution of learning.
Daily, I am inspired by the cultural richness, the spirit of diversity, and academic rigor inculcated amongst our students.
My Project
Sometimes it takes hours to find books that are appropriate, high-interest texts for my students that are thematic. In addition, it takes many hours to find paired passages so that students can make connections between texts. Luckily, I attended several workshops this year that have created an amazing list of books that my students love or know they will love. I'd love to have these complex and compelling books in our classroom!
I am requesting a set of fiction and nonfiction books based on the theme of trees and plants.
"The Story of Johnny Appleseed," "The Giving Tree," and "The Lorax" are just a few of the titles that we'd love to have in our classroom. In addition, I'd love more books by Jason Chin, an author/illustrator my students went crazy for this school year!
These books will be used as read alouds and for center work/differentiated reading during small group instruction. These books will provide the basis for literacy instruction and to teach many different skills and strategies to a wide range of students. Additionally, the books will be used in ESL push-in and pull-out classes as well as special education classes.
Your generous donation can help me instill the love of reading in my students! These books will be a great resource for my students this year and for many years to come.
P.S. We love your generosity in making all of our classroom wishes come true!
