My students need to expand their library. Most of the books we have are dated, and in order to create a meaningful relationship with reading they need new stories to inspire them.
My students from rural Oklahoma are part of the Head Start program. This class is highly diverse. Our classroom has many students who are in the foster care system as well as various students on IEPs. Everyday these students come to class energetic to learn, explore, discover and
As a teacher I focus on supplying my students with background knowledge, vocabulary and meaningful educational experiences so they will succeed in public schools in the future.
Using activity based learning, we have exposure to a variety of experiences that allow them to prepare for similar experiences they will have in public school. One of my favorite ways of engaging the class is through reading experiences because many students suffer with language development. Language acquisition is one of the most important focuses at their age and something we try and facilitate daily through read alouds, discussions and even pretend play.
My Project
Each day my students spend time with books. They are just beginning their relationship with some of the most important skills you can have in life--reading and comprehension. On the carpet during story time they are making the decision to fall in love with the reading experience or struggle with it for the rest of their lives. It is my job to try and capture each students imagination so they are as excited for story time as I am.
Our class needs to experience new adventures through expanding out classroom library.
The current library is dated. I chose books that I know students already have interests in for this project. I have had students bring Pete the Cat books to share with the class and they were a wild success. Everyone wants more Dr. Suess when I read the few stories we have, and I can't wait to introduce them to Skippyjon Jones who will quickly capture their hearts and have them laughing.
