My students are hard working, creative students who are always asking questions! They range in age from 12-14 and have a variety of ability levels. Some students are capable of independent learning and engage in enrichment while others struggle and need supports like small group instruction.
It is important that my classroom and I be flexible so I can meet all their diverse needs.
If I create different environments for different groups of students everyone can reach their highest potential.
My Project
Literacy is one of those over arching skills that applies to all areas of education and all areas of life and it is so much. more than reading. If students cannot find information, make meaning out of it, and use it to create a product they will struggle to find success in the 21st century.
Creating a comfortable literacy corner will encourage students to embrace and enjoy literacy as well as give students alternative environments to work in.
My students spend a lot of time working in small groups and are often able to choose how they want to find the knowledge they need. Giving students the additional ability to choose the environment that is best for them to complete their assigned task can increase student engagement and student productivity. It will also allow me to work with groups of students who need support while more independent students have a quiet place to work.
Two main components of the reading corner are the carpet, and bookshelf. The bookshelf will allow me to provide a place to store novels that students can choose to borrow as well as important resources that students could use in their studies and the carpet creates a more relaxed and comfortable environment to use those resources. Carpet and wood absorb sound while hard surfaces reverberate sound so these materials will help to make the literacy corner a private, quiet place to work. The other major component of the reading corner is the beanbag chairs which serve a soft seating option for students. These chairs are easy to move so students can rearrange them to work in groups or create a private area to work on their own. This flexibility to work in alternative environments focused on comfort will increase productivity and help them enjoy literacy.
