Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our third grade classrooms consist of both inclusion and pull-out services for our students with special needs. Ideally, our students with special needs will be able to obtain the support necessary to be in the general education classroom the majority of the day. Everyday I work to meet those needs.
My students struggle with a variety of disabilities that impact their ability to find success in the general education classroom.
With that being said, these students are resilient and eager to learn. Their perseverance everyday is inspiring and I am so lucky to be their teacher. Together, my students and I, are able to overcome obstacles and find different ways of meeting their needs. It has been my job to empower them to advocate for themselves by understanding their needs and their strengths and being able to communicate to others in order to help themselves. Often times, by third grade, my students are starting the year at least two years behind grade level. We have one year to ensure that they not only find success, but try and close that gap so they are not so far behind. By helping them understand themselves, they are able to help others understand them, and thus advocate for their needs in and out of the classroom.
My Project
Our classrooms are currently set up to group students at large tables. Grouping students like this can be great for social interaction and partner work, but for students with ADD or ADHD, it can be detrimental to their learning. A simple tapping of a pencil, or a colorful drawing, can grab the attention of one of my students and distract them from the work they need to get done. By having individual desks to use, my students can learn to recognize that they are getting distracted and move to a desk to complete their work. Individual desks can provide a safe and quiet work space to complete independent tasks and minimize distractions for students with ADD or ADHD.
As I have mentioned before, my students will be able to use individual desks to help them focus and stay on-task.
These desks will provide them with a safe and quiet work space to minimize distractions and increase growth towards their learning goals. I believe these desks will provide my students with the ability to self-advocate by recognizing and communicating their needs for a quiet space to complete work.
