My students need new read aloud texts to improve their literacy skills as well as their social emotional skills. Some books include Rude Cakes, Nerdy Birdy, and Friendshape.
Social time isn't just for recess anymore! My students love to socialize, but do not always know how to appropriately carry on a conversation or independently problem solve with their peers. I hope to help them gain these social skills through reading and talking about some wonderful books!
I have the pleasure of teaching 17 very playful and fun-loving first graders.
I often describe them as a silly class because they are usually smiling and laughing with each other. These students love to get hooked on good books, and I love being able to provide them with new texts as often as possible. Unfortunately, our school is labeled high poverty, and there are not many opportunities to provide my students with new materials unless I personally buy them. Despite our "high poverty" label, these kids have great school spirit and a love of learning, which I hope they keep all of their lives!
My Project
The materials I am requesting would be used on a daily basis in order to help my students better understand how to socially interact with the world around them. These texts contain amazing lessons on how to handle issues such as bullying, diversity, feelings, decision making, and listening skills. I would love to see my students improve in their communication and problem-solving skills over the course of the year with the help of hearing and discussing these texts.
One-third of my class consists of students with special needs.
It is my goal that these students are given all of the same opportunities as their peers to have normal social lives. As a result of having this project funded, all of my students will learn how important it is to treat others fairly and to celebrate individual differences. These texts will do this through fun and engaging story lines which will support both their social and literacy skills.
