Creating a Flexible Environment for Learning

My Students

My students attend a nationally recognized academic magnet school and come from all areas of the city. They must maintain a 2.5 GPA to stay enrolled.

The school has 724 kids with 71% minority students and over half of the students are from low-income families.

Like most of the country, our school system has cut funding and I am providing many supplies out of my personal funds.

My students love coming to my class because I try to make learning fun and engaging. We have an atmosphere of trust and the students learn that it is okay to be wrong. I teach world history, and though most students think history is something that they don't need to worry about, my style of teaching makes history come alive for them and they see that the past is a part of their present.

My Project

Using non-traditional student seating options in the classroom will help create an environment that the students can enter that will give them options as to where and how they wish to learn.

More and more classrooms are going towards a non-traditional style of seating options for students and teachers have responded that their students are more engaged in the lessons and classroom management has become easier.

By giving my students this different type of seating arrangement with the convertible bench, the students can use it as a regular bench for collaboration and class discussion and when necessary, they can tilt the backrest into a tabletop to work on the Chromebooks or writing assignments.
