This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come from various backgrounds. The school district is considered to be "high risk" meaning that 100% of their breakfast and lunches are free. There are many rental homes and apartments within the district so I see many new students throughout the year. Many of my students are at elementary reading levels. About half have experienced traumas. This is the reality we are living in. I know that my school is not special because of this. This is the norm in predominantly minority school districts.
My students are amazing.
I work with a group of students that energize me everyday. They are curious and funny. My students are fun, they are energetic, and most of the time they self advocate for their learning. I love them for this. We learn from each other everyday. Most of the time when people hear that I teach middle school they say something like, "well bless your soul" and they are not wrong. My kids are crazy. But, I love them for it. I just hope that I can provide them with the tools that they need to be successful.
My Project
It seems to be a recent trend in education to allow for flexible seating. I've added a few items that will help our class get started. The students transition from class to class and often have to sit in desks that are uncomfortable. The bed raisers will provide a table that the students are able to stand at. The bean bags, pillows, and lap desks will allow students to work in a more comfortable environment.
The comfortable environment is key to providing a space for the students to find comfort in learning.
I would like for them to come in and feel welcome. Our district focuses on the relationship piece. Creating an environment that is cozy will help the students feel safe. This is crucial for them to be able to learn.
