Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach children with mild to moderate learning disabilities, ADHD, language disorders, and other disabilities, in a culturally-rich high-poverty school where all of our students receive free breakfast, healthy snacks, and lunch. Through no actions of their own, these kids have been dealt a hand that will make their school careers more challenging than for some children in more ways than one.
The challenges that some of our students may face are a lack of resources, such as transportation or other economic hardships that may result in their family becoming homeless.
Our school is filled with hardworking, dedicated teachers and staff who meet the challenges of working with an at-risk population on a daily basis. We work very hard at creating a sense of community for our children, their parents, and of course the staff of our school. Thank you for your support in this endeavor!
My Project
Our small group interventions take place in a rather large room, but it is a modular building that is really just a shell. Over time, I have been able to acquire several bookcases and cabinets to hold materials for working with our students - I am so thankful for our staff who care so much for oiur students, and the donors who have helped as well. What I am wanting to do now is to create a calmer workspace by bringing some of these cabinets together in harmonious synchrony - of color! I am requesting tables with a markerboard surface with the edge and leg color that will match the color of the contact paper - black. I like to use black as a background color, and these will match the black chairs we have had donated.
The dry erase tables will be a great addition to my classroom.
These tables will be multi-purpose tables. Students will use the tables as a workspace during math and other interventions requiring student work that doesn't have to be saved. They can show their work and collaborate with each other when working in peers. For the flower table, I want to give my students the ability to have their own space delineated by a muted color carpet as well.
Having the ability to give my students a little more cohesive classroom with muted colors with small pops of color, that I will provide using the vinyl, will help them to feel as though they are valued and they matter. I look at this classroom every day and think of how I can make my students who struggle with their work be able to feel just a little more like coming in day to day. Thank you for your support!
