My fifth grade students come from low socio-economic backgrounds with one hundred percent of the students receiving free breakfast and lunch. We are a dual language school made up primarily of Hispanic students.
My students are eager to learn and work together.
The mission of our school is to provide instruction in both English and Spanish. We purposefully focus on both languages so our students leave us able to read, write, and speak both the English and Spanish languages proficiently.
Students in my classroom need tables and a carpet to work with their cooperative groups. Using the blended learning model in ELA, Math and Science, students work together and collaborate on their assignments, which is one of the 21st Century Skills I am teaching. Currently we have desks that we attempt to put together. What becomes a problem is the fact that the desks don't stay together, materials fall through where the desks are joined, and the stamina my students are trying to build gets disrupted. Students also work on their Chromebooks at their seats. The tables will provide the space that they need to have all the materials in front of them as well as a place for them to share their thoughts and ideas.
My students love to read together.
We have a rug that is falling apart. The students enjoy reading on the rug but I am afraid I am going to have to throw away the one we have. They would really appreciate having a new rug to read on.
