School has just begun! Twenty-nine kiddos now fill the learning spaces in our classroom. They've given life to tables and shelves and bulletin boards. Our classroom now breathes. And just as I begin to know each one as a learner and human, so do they begin to think about and understand themselves as learners with unique needs.
These kiddos are diverse learners!
They are ten and eleven year old fifth graders each with different learning abilities, styles, passions, and needs. They are readers and writers and scientists and artists and mathematicians eager to learn and grow.
My Project
Kiddos don't like to sit in a chair at a desk all day. Who would? Kiddos like to move while they learn. Movement and standing not only promotes health, but it promotes learning. And movement leads to collaboration. This project isn't just about a comfy spot to sit. The items chosen by KIDS allow them to be active in their learning, but most importantly move around to collaborate with peers, discuss ideas, make plans, and create.
Our classroom is one of ideas and discussion.
And when given a choice of where this learning happens; at a table, on the floor, independently, or with a small group . . . great thinking blooms!
