Creating a Community in Kindergarten

Help me give my students a loving, respectful and encouraging classroom community. Building a sense of community at a young age requires us to address their social-emotional needs.

My Students

96.5% of the students at our school are from low-income families. Our families struggle to make ends meet and to be an active partner in this educational journey. School is not necessarily a high priority for many of our students, but for some, it is THE priority.

For many students, coming to school is the bright light in their dark days, and we strive to give each student the care, attention, and academic rigor required to help them reach their full potential!

My students love to play, learn, and they especially love to be leaders of the school! My goal is to make school a safe place, help my students develop a growth mindset, and to challenge my students to try their best to accomplish any goal they set for themselves.

My Project

Everything that has been chosen for this project helps to support my students' academic & social-emotional learning skills. The social-emotional photo library will allow the identification of various types of emotions. Students will be able to self-identify their own emotions and be able to identify their peers' emotions. The feelings journals will be used for morning check-ins. In addition, the students will have access to their feelings journals throughout the day to draw and/or write about their experiences if & when they need to visit our classroom calm down center. With the Everyday Songs & Activity Box, students will meet the whole group on our community rug and will be engaged in activities that promote early learning, reinforces positive behaviors, and eases into transitions. The flex-space chairs allow students to relocate to various areas of the room to engage in learning activities and to focus on their work independently.

The materials that have been chosen support building a classroom community, focusing on the students' social & emotional learning & academic learning.

If students can not have their emotional needs met or addressed, then academic learning will suffer. It is my goal to help my students' foster a safe space, a classroom community that will support their social-emotional needs & academic learning.
