Creating a Comfortable Math Classroom by Providing Flexible Seating Options
Help me give my students counter height stools, balance balls, comfy floor seating, and chair bands so they can have choice and more movement in my math class.
My students come to school each day eager to learn. I am trying a new approach to teaching mathematics which requires the children to collaborate and problem solve together through rich discussions. Throughout the day, I teach 101 fourth and fifth grade students math.
I want my students to collaborate and be comfortable taking risks as they learn and try new things.
However, my current classroom structure does not fully lend itself to a discussion rich, problem solving approach to mathematics instruction. I also currently have limited options for students who wish to stand, sit on the floor, or need to fidget or move while learning.
My Project
The flexible seating options I am requesting for my classroom were specifically selected for the unique needs of my students. The new furniture would give my students a variety of options for seating besides the traditional hard chairs they are used to. Many of the students would be able to move around while learning. The UrbanMod 24 Inch Kitchen Counter Height, Indoor, Outdoor Metal Bar Stools would allow me to raise the height of one of my student tables so that students who want to stand have an option to sit in a taller stool or stand. The Comfy Floor Seats will enable the students to work comfortably on the floor alone or collaboratively. The Gaiam Kids Stay-N-Play Children's Balance Balls and Chair Bands for Kids with Fidgety Feet will be helpful for students who need to move while learning. Students need to be comfortable in their learning environment and flexible seating would help the achieve that goal.
Comfortable students are focused and productive.
Students learn best when they are able to work together. Flexible seating allows students to easily work in small groups or discuss as a whole class.
