Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
While they come from a variety of backgrounds, many of my students are first generation English language learners. Many will also be the first in their family to go to college.
Students at our school are hopeful and determined, in spite of often daunting challenges that are in their way.
Some come from the most dire of socioeconomic situations, but they still come to school every day ready to learn. One of the biggest goals we have here in the middle school is to broaden the horizons of our students. The greater their awareness of the world outside of their immediate life, the greater their desire to succeed in school.
My Project
This year, we will be starting community circles at our school. The purpose of the circles is to create a safe space for all of our students, and provide opportunities for them to know that their voices are heard. An important part of the circle is that the students are not to have anything in between them - it helps promote a sense of equity. The desks I have in my classroom are attached, so using them would not an appropriate option. Also, we have a hard, tile floor, so sitting would not be comfortable for a forty minute period.
Instead, let's use comfortable, colorful stools and cushions to make a safe space for students.
The stools are easy to move around and quickly create a circle space. The cushions make the stools more comfortable and create a fidget space (which helps students self-regulate) for them during the circle team.
