Creating a Comfortable and Safe Learning Environment
My students need indoor activities such as board games and sensory games, comfortable seating options (couch and area rug) and air purifiers and refills to make school a more safe and comfortable place to be.
I am currently a fully self-contained special education teacher in a Title 1 elementary school in Hilo Hawaii. I have a range of students from kindergarten to 5th grade with all different sorts of disabilities, ranging from genetic disorders, autism, cerebral palsy, and intellectually disabled.
I feel that students need to have a safe and comfortable place to come to everyday.
For my fully self-contained classroom, I want the students to be able to feel comfortable to explore, express and learn.
My Project
I am requesting these items for my classroom due to the poor air quality that we may and have been faced with due to the current volcanic activity and situation on our island in Hawaii. Although we are not directly impacted by the lava flow, we are impacted due to unsafe and uncertainty of S02 air quality levels from the volcano on some days, I would like to request for indoor games and sensory activities for days when we have to have indoor recess, students and come together and play these games and activities with one another and not have to worry about the bad air quality outside or the frequent earthquakes. I am also asking comfortable seating such as a couch and area rug so that the students can feel comfortable during indoor recess and feel free to choose where they would like to play their indoor games. Lastly I am requesting air purifiers and refills that will make the cancellation of outdoor recess more enjoyable indoors due to the poor S02 air quality levels from the volcano. A lot of my students have bad asthma and being outside makes it hard for them to breathe. My goal for this project is to be able to create a safe and comfortable space that all of my students can be enjoy during the days that the air quality is poor. Play is such an important part of development!
