Creating a Classroom to Look Forward to and Beyond!
Help me give my students a safe and welcoming place to land with alternative seating arrangements, surrounded by inspirational and interactive imagery, language, and work they can be proud of!
My students are diverse learners who face challenges that are not always obvious but that are persistent and overwhelming at times. I admire their resiliency and determination, coming to class each day eager and ready to learn despite previous disappointments and ongoing frustrations.
Many of my students are new to middle school and while their peers enjoy a choice of electives, they are attending classes to help support their social growth in addition to their academic success.
For those who are in their last year of junior high, it is critical that I help them identify the learning and coping strategies that work best for them as they begin the transition to high school.
Everything I have to teach my students hinges on them working as productive members of a classroom community; in order to build that community, I need to create a safe space with equal access to resources and time. With the help of DonorsChoose.org, I hope to provide my students with the tools necessary to make positive choices in and out of the classroom.

My Project
As an education specialist, I’m always looking for safe, engaging, and flexible solutions to offer my students. There are so many ways for them to express their knowledge, share their ideas, and explore their questions, but there are not always opportunities for them to feel comfortable enough to go for it!
Our classroom has standard issue tables and chairs and a linoleum floor, but there is no soft, calming, and restorative area for my students to access when they need to reestablish their personal space and refocus their energies in order to get back to learning and creating.
Being able to gather around comfortably for community building activities, readings, and discussions, surrounded by colorful student work printed out from our new (and only) printer, would show my students the encouragement and support they need to thrive, in the classroom and beyond.
