Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are smart, creative, and community-minded. They are interested and curious about the world around them. They want to understand why the inequities exist in our society, so that they can figure out how to challenge and transform our society.
My students are facing so many challenges during this year back to in-person learning.
Many are struggling with motivation and adjusting to the structured school schedule. They have to manage their academic responsibilities and other responsibilities outside of school.
We are a Title I school, so we need a lot of extra resources, especially if we want to order supplies or class sets of books. A high percentage of students receive free and reduced-price lunch, so it is also another financial burden for families to purchase extra supplies.
My Project
In my history classes, we often learn together in collaborative groups and I ask students to represent their work in some visual way. I encourage working collectively and love to see what my students can produce when they work together. It is amazing to see students learn complex ideas and represent those ideas visually. Just this past week, we learned about capitalism through a role play simulation. Students created posters depicting what they learned and presented their work to each other.
I have found that my students can best demonstrate their learning by creating visual representations, whether that is in the form of illustrations, flowcharts, venn diagrams, or other graphics.
My students get excited when they have different art supplies available to create their charts and posters.
I want to transform my classroom to a learning gallery where student learning is regularly displayed and celebrated. I want my students and our guests to be proud of our collective learning because we can see everything on the walls of our learning gallery.
