This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Being a student during a pandemic isn't easy. I have requested resources that will help my students with the stress and learning loss caused by COVID-19.

Many of my students have struggled being back in school.

Being a special education resource teacher, many of my students have big emotions that they need support with in regulating. The stress and anxiety caused by COVID-19 have often negatively impacted my students. The items in my project will support a variety of learning and social-emotional needs.

I have found that my students respond well to flexible seating choices. I've included soft seating options, wobble stools, and a classroom rug to support students' need for flexible seating, moving to a quieter spot in the room, getting their wiggles out, providing sensory input or collaborating with peers.

I've also included sensory items such as a weighted blanket and therapy putty to provide students with materials to help them calm themselves and be able to refocus on learning.

Finally, my project includes items to support a calm and welcoming classroom environment. There is a classroom rug in beautiful blues and greens to provide a place to gather in small groups, flexible seating, a space to spread out with a good book and more! There is an oversized green pillow to promote a sense of coziness as well as offer seating options.

I have also requested blue bulletin board paper and borders in calming colors with the border showing the colors of the ocean. Creating a calm space for my students would be so beneficial for their social, emotional, and mental health!
