Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with amazing students! As a school counselor, I am privileged to work with all students, not just one particular grade level. I watch each one come to school every day eager to learn both academics and the social emotional skills they need to get along in society.
My school serves over 700 students Pre-K through 6th grade in a high poverty, urban setting.
Our school provides a stable environment for our students to learn and thrive. We work hard to make sure our students know that the adults care for them and are willing to assist them in achieving their goals.
My Project
My students need a safe place to calm down. I am working to create an office/student space that will give them a space to call their own.
Each student is unique.
Each one requires different coping skills to help with anger and issues at school. My office provides a variety of ideas for the student to select what works for them. This year, I want to teach older students that journaling can help them deal with their problems. I will use the printer to help them journal creatively. I have students who love to express themselves artistically and a printer will help them create journals that express their emotions by using colorful clip art.
I plan to use the calm light as another tool for students to focus so they can calm down in nice space. Students come in to my room with lots of emotion. I want them to be able to learn to cope and leave ready to learn.
