I teach all day bilingual kindergarten at New Field School in Rogers Park in Chicago. The school serves Pre-K through 3rd grade students. Most of my students are new to the country and for many this year marks their first school experience. Our community is a mix of mostly African Americans and Latinos with some Eastern Europeans, Middle Easterners and a recent influx of Somali Bantu refugees. Most of our students live at or below the poverty line and receive free or reduced lunches. They have limited access to resources.
My students LOVE books! We read aloud daily, have classroom library time and have made some class books, too. To further encourage them and continue the literacy connection into their homes I have started a classroom checkout library. Unfortunately, I don't have many books and most of what I do have has been donated/salvaged and most are in English. This creates a challenge since most of their parents cannot speak or read English.
My students' parents are great! I have never met a harder working group. They do everything they can to help their children even after working long hours at exhausting and tough jobs. If they had books in Spanish or bilingual books they could actually read with them, I know they would.
My goal is to build a library with a good mix of English, Spanish and bilingual books, and right now we are sorely lacking in the Spanish and bilingual book categories. For this project, I need and would greatly appreciate as many bilingual and Spanish language books for K-1 as possible to fill our take-home library for 25 students. Picture books, board books, big books; all books are welcome!
My students are amazing! They are just starting out on the road to literacy and I'm so excited by their enthusiasm that I'll do whatever I can to encourage them to continue to build their love of books and reading. If they are available right from our classroom, they would have full access and it would really go a long way to encourage them. It would also inspire future classes of grateful kindergarteners, too!
