My classroom makes up one of 42 classrooms (K-5) in a school that serves over 750 students K-5. Of our population, all the students who attend our school receive free and reduced-price lunch. We also start our days serving breakfast in the classrooms.
It is one of the largest elementary schools in our district and has a high population of students living in poverty.
We are a low-performing school that is fighting to challenge our students in any way possible. We are fighting every day to close the achievement gap, but it's hard when students don't have their most basic of needs.
Some students look forward to coming to school just to get away from their home environments and we, as teachers, try to make the most out of what materials we have. We as a school strive to meet the needs of our students as well as make a fun and engaging environment for each and every child.
I am asking for 2 iPads and protective cases. We just recently got funded for 2 iPads and these 2 iPads we are requesting would Students will be able to use these as they complete word work activities, use multiplication/division flash card apps, use with our schools sphero sets, as well other educational apps that our school provides.
Students utilize a lot of time in centers within the classroom and it is my goal to create an interactive technology center where students are able to explore, create and invent.
Our school does have one Chromebook cart per grade level. We also do have access as a school to a few Chromebook and iPad carts, although it sometimes is very difficult to find a time when the carts are available for use due to others also trying to check them out. Our classroom currently only has 4 Chromebooks and 3 desktops. I am trying to create a classroom that is 1 to 1 for technology access for students.
Many of my students dread the usual seat work as many students do. Although when I give them assignment where they can create their own google presentation or make a video teaching how to solve a particular problem, this allows them not only to expand their learning of a specific concept but also helps improve computer literacy.
