Help me give my students the supplies needed to create their own theatrical masks that will connect their developing knowledge of Greek theater and their own representations of themselves. I am requesting the pulp masks and decorative materials.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach drama at a south side Chicago high school and am working hard to build the fine arts program. I have grades 9-12 in my classroom and work hard to create lessons that can motivate and challenge ALL of those grade levels in one classroom. A majority of these students have never had the opportunity to take an arts class before.
My students are passionate, talented, and amaze me daily.
They pick up on acting skills so quickly and use drama to express themselves and their emotions. Whether or not they incorporate the arts into their careers one day, I want to give them every opportunity to express themselves and grow as individuals in my classroom.
My Project
These materials will make this project accessible for all my students when it normally wouldn't be. Students will not have to purchase their own supplies in order to participate. I have 42 students in my largest class period, and the volume of supplies will ensure all students can work at the same time and not have to wait for materials. The students will use the pulp masks as a blank canvas to create their own character. They will use the art supplies (feathers, shapes, mosaic tile, sequins) to decorate and mold the mask to make it uniquely fit their character.
The basic mask and decorative items will allow students to unleash their creativity and realize in a hands on way what they have been studying.
In addition to the project supplies, I have requested items that will support cleanup so I can make the tasks work practically in my classroom.
