I have 3 classes of 10th grade students for World History. It is a pleasure to teach these young students; they are very diverse and bring different perspectives into the classroom. You never know what they will say or do; everyday is different and never boring.
Recently, one of my 5th period students said my class was like being in "lock down" which I took as a complement since I have high expectations for all my students and they have work to do in class.
When they leave my class I want them to be informed on how the world has ended up with situations it has today. I try to apply rigor to all classes and have been increasing it as we have progressed through the school year.
Since all students do not test well, for the past few years I have differentiated my final- students can take a final exam or complete a final project. The final project shows what they have learned as well as their creativity and personal opinions. I am applying for this donation in order to purchase tri-fold boards for final projects for students who may not be able to otherwise.
My Project
Students have to use their knowledge of the 8 traits of civilization to create their own country, kingdom or empire. Students can choose to work alone or with a partner. Each has to show what work they did work on and display project at the end of the year. Students can display this as a book, photo album or tri fold presentation.
Students create their own government including laws, map, natural resources available, cities, capital, borders, most common jobs, religions, etc.
Along with written information, students have to include illustrations/pictures to show the culture of their creation. This is using their knowledge from the content we have discussed all year with their creativity to add their own twist to the country they would create if they could.
