My school is a mid-size middle school with grades six and seven. My students come from varied economic backgrounds. My class is an elective class full of eager minds ready to take on the challenge of solving problems. My students are involved in projects that use technology to help solve problems in our community.
Education advanced through service and technology is the key theme for all that we do in my class.
Each student-led project focuses on this fundamental philosophy.
Teamwork is a key ingredient to all that we do. Teamwork allows us to learn about our topic and each other as we go. My students have discovered that while working together, we can solve problems more effectively.
My students have wanted to try using a 3D pen, but so far I haven't been able to provide them this experience. I selected a mid-range printer pen and a less expensive model to see if there was a quality difference. This would allow students the opportunity to possibly purchase a less expensive pen for their personal use.
My students already have access to a standard 3D printer; this would allow students the extension activity of printing from a 3D pen.
Being able to create with filament will be a new experience. Students will learn how the filament actually stacks on top of itself to create objects.
Translating students' thoughts and ideas to a model can be used to teach other concrete topics, such as science and math models.
