My elementary school students are a fun loving, curious, creative, and enthusiastic group of children. They dive into everything I present to them with zeal.
I teach all of our 300+ Kindergarten through fifth grade students four times a year in a discovery class about sounds.
They learn about sound and have the opportunity to listen to musical instruments, play musical instruments, and design and make their own musical instruments. They love learning about sound and the different ways to make sound. It's a lot of fun in this classroom.
My Project
I teach at both the elementary and middle school levels. This project is for my elementary school. (For complete transparency - my middle school is shown in my school details with more than 3/4 low-income households--my elementary is at 64%.) All Kindergarten through fifth grade students at my elementary school go to STEAM discovery classes each week. During the school year, all students go to each discovery teacher's classroom four times. When they come to my discovery class, they learn about sound creation and they experiment with different sounds. We listen, experiment, play band and orchestra instruments, and we make instruments.
Students experiment with materials I display for them and decide on a musical instrument they would like to create with those materials (sometimes a likeness of an instrument they have found interesting, and sometimes a completely new instrument of their own imagining).
They design their instrument, draw a picture of it, name it, and give me a list of materials they have chosen to use to create that instrument. The following week I have their materials ready for them and they go to work! Following construction of their instruments, we all play our new instruments together. We have an assortment of drums, shakers, bells, wind and string instruments, and some wildly creative instruments in our little band. They are so proud of their creations.
The materials I am requesting are supplemental to recycled materials donated by parents, such as paper towel rolls and bottle caps, plus classroom materials such as paper, glue, and markers. The requested materials are those that have been successfully used for instrument making in the last couple of years, and that I don't normally receive as classroom donations.
