"We need to empower our students of tomorrow with the tools of today." I want to step up my programs to reflect an educational classroom that will move the children towards the future. Using the Samsung Chromebooks to access internet based resources would make this possible.
Can you imagine what it would be like to have one or both parents deployed for 6-12 months at a time?
It's an additional challenge to keep a 6 year-old's mind on learning when a parent is overseas. Or when they move midyear and have to learn a different curriculum from what they had before. Technology has a way of stimulating a child's mind, engaging them into meaningful learning and negating everyday stresses.
I teach first grade at a high needs (Title I) school serving predominately military dependents and children learning English as a second language, as well as students with special needs. Many of my students have at least one parent currently deployed overseas and most have moved frequently throughout their short lives.
My students need to use technology daily as a tool, to keep them engaged and interested in our lessons. The Chromebooks will allow them to access our on-line reading, math, and word study programs to enhance as well as remediate what they are learning.
My Project
Our classroom size continues to grow and it doesn't look like it will be getting any smaller in the next few years. It breaks my heart each time I have to ask a six-year-old student to be patient while I help others.
Currently, during my Literacy Block, 25 kids rotate through four stations. This block is about 2 hours long. I meet with one group of six students during each 20 minute rotation. The other three stations are ones I've created that enhance student learning. But the reality is, 19 students are without me during 3 of the 4 rotations. It is very difficult to make the learning meaningful for all students, each with their individual needs.
Having twelve Chromebooks in my class would allow 2 more groups to be actively engaged in meaningful learning. Students would NOT have to wait patiently to learn anymore. It would change my room dramatically. Again, during math time, nearly half the class could be doing our on-line program, while I work with a smaller group.
With 12 Chromebooks, my room would look much different!
You would still see a group of six students working with me learning to read. All other groups would be utilizing internet based programs. Using a Chromebook, students would be reading or listening to books and taking quizzes, learning phonics to support their reading, and researching their favorite nonfiction topic.
