This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Students can't learn new things without having experiences to tie the new information back to.
My students attend a high-poverty school in a large Texas metroplex.
They are almost entirely from single-parent homes and live in large apartment complexes. Most of the parents work several jobs and the students are left at home alone frequently. These challenges keep my students from building the life experiences that many students come to school already possessing.
My Project
I am requesting experiences for my students. They haven't had the option of observing animal life-cycles, and by having a pet in the classroom, they will be able to watch and participate in the lives of another being. They will also be given the chance to help maintain the habitat, instilling a sense of responsibility.
These lizards will not only give my students specific memories, but they will also help foster a sense of curiosity and wonderment in them early in their academic careers.
This curiosity will follow them throughout their lives.
