I teach first grade gifted and talented. My students are a very diverse group of children. They come from many different cultural backgrounds. They are eager to learn and it's difficult, if not impossible, to develop the talent of a highly able student with insipid curriculum and instruction. Like all students, gifted learners need learning experiences that are rich. They need content that is relevant to their lives, activities that cause them to process important ideas at a high level, and products that cause them to grapple with meaningful problems. They need classrooms that are engaging that provides both structure and choice and help them achieve more than they thought they could. Good teaching for gifted learners is achieved in response to the students' individual needs. Often, highly able students learn more quickly than others their age. As a result, they typically need a more rapid and enriching instruction.
My Project
Providing a well-rounded educational program for the gifted and talented is important. My goal is to integrate more art into the curriculum through literacy and science. I have many young artists in my classroom but not the supplies to foster their talents. This is why I would like to focus on teaching elements of the creative arts to students during school. I would like to spark their creativity. We need more arts and crafts materials to nurture their creative talents. I want to challenge them with new materials and techniques. New tempera paint supplies, collage pots, sun catchers, craft supplies will help me as a teacher design a more enriching, creative experience for my students.
