Every single day, I am blown away by 140 teenagers. These students are accomplished, articulate, passionate, and inquisitive. Thinking back on my high school years, I am not sure that I could compete with the students of today. I have the pleasure of teaching Honors English and an ESOL support class (students who immigrated from the US and need support learning English) at an academically driven high school.
My students take demanding dual enrollment, AP, and honors classes and consistently rise to the challenge; they deserve the best instruction I can give them.
I strive to provide my students with a comfortable, inviting, and stimulating environment while continuously challenging them to always keep improving. These children walk a fine line between thriving and breaking under the many demands placed upon them. They require a space where they feel secure enough to explore new ideas, texts, and writing styles without fear of failure. I want to be able to infuse rigor and out of the box thinking into my instruction using creative methods---allowing these students to grow and learn in refreshing, interesting ways that do not feel like rote learning.
My Project
My students need supplies, such as markers, colored paper, dry erase markers, that can be used to foster creativity and original thinking as we work through demanding English Language Arts standards. Honors English classes can be very overwhelming with literature, research, writing, and presentations; therefore, I'd like to give my students an outlet to express themselves through writing with these journals. Ideally, I would like to promote original thinking and arm these hard-working students with the tools to express themselves, while conquering our subject.
Using student-centered methods and creative projects will allow my stressed students not only to succeed but learn in a way that is rigorous yet fun.
I would like to use a smartboard to enhance our daily lessons; art supplies are essential to creating projects, and organizational items like a storage center, a portable whiteboard system, and a 10 drawer organizer will help facilitate learning. After students have finished, their projects will be proudly displayed and celebrated within the classroom, creating an environment that is personal and inspiring. With your assistance, I aspire to create a class where the students thrive and, at the same time, give them a bright spot in their schedule.
