I am a teacher at a Title 1 school in Texas. I teach three levels of Chemistry: Inclusion Chemistry, PreAP Chemistry, and AP Chemistry. My students range from kids who desire to go to medical school to those who are just trying to get enough science credits to graduate.
Each student comes to me with unique experiences that have shaped them into the type of learner they are today.
Teaching this diverse group at times is challenging and with such a dichotomy of learners reaching students in a traditional classroom setting, that is teacher led, is often impossible.
My Project
One of the more difficult topics for chemistry students to grasp is the mole. The mole is a unit of measurement used by chemist to quantify the amount of a substance. Even though this unit is difficult, my students love this unit and their favorite part is creating a stuffed mole.
The students use their creativity to make their mole come to life!
The students come up with a catchy name for the mole and use felt to create a stuffed version of the mole. Some of the more memorable moles include: Bill-mole Baggins from the Hobbit, Guaca-mol-ee, Alexander Ha-mol-ton, Li-mol and Stich and Hans Molo... just to name a few!
Students remark that this is their favorite activity we do each year.
However, many of my students have a hard time getting the supplies for their moles. I try and have supplies for these students but I cannot afford supplies for all. I am seeking funding to provide supplies for my students so they can participate in this activity without the financial strain. Help me make this difficult concept fun and memorable for my chemistry students by providing mole making supplies for my students!
