Help me give my students EV3 Lego Mindstorm Robots to gain practical, hands on experience using mathematical concepts such as estimating and measuring distance, time, and speed.
"FIRST is more than robots. The robots are a vehicle for students to learn important life skills. Kids often come in not knowing what to expect - of the program nor of themselves. They leave, even after the first season, with a vision, with confidence, and with a sense that they can create their own future." - Dean Kamen
My students are eager to become 21st Century STEM Learners.
They come to class everyday ready to learn. We are a Title I school, which means that over 50% of our students are on free or reduced lunch. We are a unique school with only grades 5 and 6 with over 950 students.
As a STEAM teacher, it is important for me to prepare my students for the future workforce so that they can be productive adults. My students enjoy the hands-on and real world experiences that they learn in my STEAM class.
My Project
We currently have one EV3 Lego Mindstorm Robot. One Robot serves only two students. With the funding of this project I will be able to add two more Robots and a Science education pack. With more EV3 Robots it will allow me to reach more students. We have lot of students who are interested in Robotics, but not enough materials.
The EV3 Robot is a programmable computer that allows students to control motors, and collect sensor feedback.
Students have the ability to use the Lego Mindstorm software or programming app to build simple commands for the robot. In my STEAM classes, students are given missions for the Robot to complete by using the Mindstorm programming app.
