Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a special education teacher at Walsh. My students learn in many modes such as visual, auditory, and hands on. We would like to be able to hear as well as see a story that is being presented. We would like to have a listening center and an overhead projector for our class.
Since I teach a variety of disabilities (mild to severe cognitive impaired, severe learning disabilities, and behavior disorders) I could use these machines to open up the magical world of reading for my wonderful and curious students. These machines would allow my auditory students to listen to a selection on tape or CD. My visual students would use the overhead for processing material the way they learn best. Also an overhead would allow me to reach all of them versus one at a time to practice good writing skills and spelling and to learn good comprehension techniques.
Some examples of how we would use these materials would be: listen to Open Court stories at the first grade level; read them together orally; and finally re-read the story while listening to the tape for a review of the material. (This can be done while the teacher is working with others on skills and practice.) The overhead can help them to work on Venn diagrams, to correct their sentences using group discussion, and learn how to relate what they heard to what they see.
If you choose to help us I know that my students will have some resources that will truly help them in their quest to read and comprehend what they are reading.
