I teach at Oliver Wendell Holmes Elementary School in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood. 95% of students at Holmes come from low-income families. Last year, I taught nineteen book-crazy first graders. They eagerly devoured every story, poem, play or magazine article put their way. They were a joy to teach and watching their reading skills grow over the course of the year was truly amazing. In September, I will be privileged to teach these same nineteen students in second grade, along with seven additional, new students. I am eagerly anticipating guiding my students on the next leg of their educational journey. The second grade reading curriculum used at my school includes daily read-alouds designed to improve comprehension and allow students to draw comparisons between texts. While the text of each story is printed in my teacher's guide, I feel that the experience would be less boring and more meaningful for everyone involved if my students could hear the story read from the actual book! In addition to being able to see illustrations, students can check the book out of the classroom library to take home and share with their families, or simply reread the story over and over again in class. I will be able to borrow some titles from other teachers, but these stories would complete the collection and make for a much more meaningful start to each day!
