My students are creative, thoughtful and inquisitive young adults! They love hands-on, active, engaging projects and challenges that allow them to think outside the box to find solutions! They come to school each day ready to try new things and take brave chances in order to grow both personally and academically.
Within a culture that demands students enter the workforce with the ability to collaborate well with others, the style of desks we currently have do not lend itself to practicing these skills.
My students are confined to the old-school desks built into chairs, making it difficult to work on projects and engage with their peers.
My Project
The benefits of educational makerspaces are many and varied. While they do not come without their challenges, makerspaces can have a significant impact on student learning and development. Having flexible seating provides opportunity for students to collaborate with their peers and make choices based on their differentiation needs. The tables that I have requested will create this space within my classroom. When students are working individually, I could have a group of students working at the tables. This will allow me to either reteach my students or enrich at these tables.
In fact, makerspaces were recently identified as one of six important developments in educational technology for K-12 education.
If my project gets funded, my students will be engaged learners. This will promote creative, higher-order problem-solving through hands-on design, construction, and iteration. The benefits are extremely important to advance my students' educational careers. In addition, tables are a realistic setting in high school and college as well as in their future careers.
