I am a fifth grade, Title I teacher in a small West Virginia town. The kids I teach are just like kids all over the country. They are good and decent and want to do the right thing. Our students are funny and intelligent. Most come to school ready to learn, but unfortunately, not all of these kids are given the best foundation. We do live in a high poverty area. Many of our students lack basic needs, let alone technology, in their home. We try hard to fill in the gaps and keep our students competitive with others across the country.
My Project
This school year we began teaching coding activities and it has been so successful and well received by our students (and parents) that a colleague and I have started an after school tech club. It has been a huge success thanks to the funding of several projects here on DonorsChoose.org. This club allows us to give our students more access to technology and coding than we can do in the classroom. We are hoping to add Cubelets TWELVE robot blocks, along with several other sets of Cubelets, to our club to expand our access and continue to grow in technology. These activities have been an amazing adventure for our fifth grade. The students are excited and eager, they are begging us to add more meetings to the club! I have rarely seen this much excitement in our student body. I would love to keep that momentum going!
