My Students

My students are an amazing group of caring, funny, and kind 6-year-olds. They are a diverse group; many students having special needs and most are English language learners. They all come from very different home environments. Some of my students are lucky enough to live with their parents and siblings, while others may live with their grandparents or other guardians while their parents are out of state for work.

Many of my students tend to lack resources, experience, and exposure from home, so it is important for me to provide them with experiences that are both academic and fun.

My Project

My colleagues and I recently visited a school whose work in coding and computer science in the classroom was being showcased... and let's just say we were blown away! It was amazing to see how technology, especially coding can be introduced at all grade levels and what positive results they yield.

Coding teaches students critical thinking, problem-solving skills, math skills, persistence, creativity and collaboration.

Coding is the computer language that is used to develop apps, websites and software; essentially telling your computer what to do. Today almost everything a child touches involves and is created by coding - their toys, remotes, TVs, phones and even watches. It is important that they not only know how these items work, but also know what makes them work and that they too can use coding to create useful programs.

These cases will be used to protect our current iPads, as well as the ones in part 1 of this project from the daily wear and tear of 30 first graders. We will use the cart and charging station to give all of our iPads a special spot in our classroom where they can refuel!

Please help us as we take on this large initiative to incorporate coding into our classroom! Not only is coding fun for students, but these are skills that will be extremely valuable in the work force as technology becomes more and more prominent in our world.
