Crazy for Cardboard! Designing Paper Mache Sculptures

My students need liquid starch to paper mache their cardboard sculptures and acrylic paint for color mixing values of choice.

My Students

Have you ever built something from scratch? Do you remember the feeling that came from it? With minimal supplies, students can gain confidence in art that they never thought possible...if they envision it, they can build it!

My students are amazing and talented!

They are hard working and dedicated. I can honestly say our school is a great place to be, but the Art department is lacking in support and funds. For many students, this is their first art experience but hopefully not their last. I love teaching and giving them new experiences that may hopefully lead them to future college classes but funding my classroom projects has become extremely difficult. I, as well as my students, can see that it has taken a toll on the program.

My Project

By using such a material as simple as cardboard, my students will create personal relief sculptures that give them a sense of confidence. Students will start with personal photos of family and friends and break these images down into basic shapes. These shapes will then be cut using exacto knives and then built. Each piece will be cut individually (like a puzzle)using cardboard along with masking tape for joining the edges. Students will learn the art of paper mache and the application of acrylic paint. They will be taught color mixing and the personalities of colors. They will be amazed at how such a simple material can be so durable when built correctly. They will get to stand on each piece to test truly how strong it can be. They love this part!

I want to challenge my students with no prior 3-D Art experience to built something from scratch.

I want them to problem solve and make artistic decisions about their pieces so they realize they have the power to manipulate any medium. This project gives them a strong foundation for future 3-D Art projects and a sense of confidence.
